For the past two years, Aganetha Dyck worked with the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA on a new collaborative project.
In the spring of 2015, Dyck purchased 7 porcelain figurines, prepared them for the hive and shipped them to Philadelphia. In order to have the bees work on the figurines “live” in the gallery, they were housed in a china cabinet. The china cabinet had hive frames filled with honeybees and was connected to the outdoors and another hive. Visitors to the gallery were able to watch the progress live. Dyck worked virtually with the beekeeper and the gallery staff, monitoring the progress of the figurines. She informed the beekeeper where to place starter comb on the figurines, where to carve out, where to add wax, and informed them when the work is complete. This collaboration continues Dyck’s history of collaborating, first with the bees, and now with scientists, beekeepers and curators.
