We are assisting the estate of Herb & Margot Ariss by selling artwork and furniture from their home. This is our first estate sale. Included in the sale are artworks by Herb Ariss, David Blackwood, Greg Curnoe, Duncan de Kergommeaux, L.A.C. Panton and York Wilson, among others, as well as their teak dining room table and chairs, rosewood desk and wooden print drawers.
Together, Herb & Margot supported, nurtured and collected the artists of their generation. Their collection is a rare, honest combination of artists. It is a unique opportunity to own a piece from the collection of an important London couple.
Herb Ariss RCA, OSA (1916-2009) was an artist and teacher who made a significant contribution to Canadian art as head of the art department at Beal Technical Institute in London from 1947-1977. His many students included Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe and Murray Favro. Herb enthusiastically encouraged his students to create a unique voice and was integral in making Beal one of Canada’s foremost art schools.
Margot Ariss (1929-2013) met Herb while attending Beal Art. As a sculptor, wife and mother, Margot created a home and garden that displayed her warmth and joy for life. Herb and Margot faithfully attended gallery openings and frequently would welcome artists, writers, poets, physicians and philosophers into their home on Saturday nights.
