Jenna Faye Powell’s middle gallery exhibition for the month of July features new paintings that transform domestic realities into a fantastical space. Inspired by her childhood spent camping and playing board games with her family, Powell has re-created many of these magical experiences in her paintings. She wants to create the feeling you get when you find something surreal in ordinary things: activities to escape the mundane, or getaways from everyday suburban life.
Jenna Faye Powell has a MFA degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, as well as a BFA degree from the University of Western Ontario. Powell has participated in various solo and group shows including Brave New Worlds at Museum London, the Windsor- Essex Triennial at the Art Gallery of Windsor. In 2012 Powell was a national finalist for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. She lives and maintains a studio in London, Ontario, where she is also Gallery Director of the Forest City Gallery.
As a self-proclaimed optimist, Powell looks to the fantastical to, not escape reality, but to be further engaged with it. Her artistic endeavours seek to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, frequently confronting cynicism with a cartoonish devotion to optimistic pursuits.
