Will Gorlitz “New Paintings”

Will Gorlitz “New Paintings” – November 6 – 28, 2009

Will Gorlitz’s statement in a recent interview in Border Crossings Magazine perfectly summarizes our breathtaking exhibition:

“I’m continuing with a couple of the recent themes with slight variations. While I don’t want to claim too much in relation to the environmental issue, I think it’s appropriate to be reflecting on it in some way. I’m using the Arboretum, which is a wonderful resource at the University of Guelph. It’s a preserve where specimens of trees from around the world have been brought in. Some cope and others don’t. But it contains an amazing range of tree specimens in a semi-park like context. So there’s the Arboretum and there’s the animal menagerie: the kingdom of plants and animals seem to be worth more exploration. They both involve sentiment, which seems like an artistic taboo, especially for someone who is male. But recently I’ve included that emotional aspect in subjects like flowers and tears. There’s a part of me that really wants to go there. It’s contrary to common sense, so I’m happy to go there in the spirit of contrariness.” (Border Crossings, Volume 28, number 3, Issue 111, page 51)
