September 5 – November 1, Curated by Iga Janik
Idea Exchange | Preston, 435 King Street East, Cambridge, ON
Friday Night ART Live Opening: Friday, September 18, 7:00pm
Themes & Derivations presents the latest series of paintings by Kitchener-based artist Doug Kirton in his first solo exhibition at Idea Exchange Art + Design. Developed over the past year, the exhibition comprises several works including natural representation, architectural spaces, and suburban locations. The labour intensive process of building up layers and textures remains at the core of Kirton’s painting practice, and the exhibition showcases his diverse approaches to representation and subject.

Doug Kirton received his BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (Halifax) in 1978 and his MFA from the University of Guelph in 1994. Kirton’s work has been shown extensively across Canada, and he has participated in two-person and group exhibitions in the United States, Switzerland and China. His work is represented in numerous important public collections including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum London, and the Shanghai Art Museum. Kirton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo. In 2010 he was honoured with the UW Distinguished Teacher Award and the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) Award for Excellence in Teaching.
