Howard Hodgkin’s four “Venetian Views” show the same view of Venice at different times of the day. Each is so distinctly different from the others that it is difficult, at first sight, to believe that all four were printed from the same set of five printing plates. The printed colours, and the hand-colouring applied directly to the paper, vary from one view to another.
“Venetian Views” demonstrate many qualities that have long been symptomatic of Hodgkin’s approach to printmaking: the boldness and immediacy of the marks, the eloquence of the brushstrokes, the adaptation of the plate, the transformation through hand-colouring, the risk-taking. What sets these prints apart is their complexity.
