Calgary Municipal Land Corporation unveils “THESAMEWAYBETTER / READER”, a major mosaic by Calgary artist Ron Moppett October 2012.

Ron Moppett’s five-panel mosaic brings a plethora of colour to the East Village’s Riverfront Lane. As of today’s unveiling, passing pedestrians will have the opportunity to gaze up at the enormous artwork and interpret the story layered into each panel piece.

The 33-metre long and 3.9-metre high mosaic took one year to make, not including the time it took Moppett to create the collage and painting that inspired the wall. Moppett worked closely with German stained glass experts Mayer of Munich to create the piece which features more than 956,321 unique tiles made from Italian (Venetian) and Mexican glass.

Moppett’s title, “THESAMEWAYBETTER/READER,” refers to the East Village, including the role the neighbourhood has played in the development of Calgary and the work Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) is doing to revitalize the neighbourhood. The mosaic is also a tribute to Mr. William Reader, one of Calgary’s first visionary urban planners.
